Few terms have moved from the biochemistry lecture theatre into mainstream health conversation as quickly as “peptide”. In regenerative and functional medicine, therapeutic peptides have become a subject of serious clinical interest — not as a fashionable supplement, but as precise signalling molecules that interact with specific biological pathways. What a peptide is, precisely

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds — typically fewer than around fifty residues, which distinguishes peptides from the larger, more complex proteins. The body synthesises thousands of endogenous peptides that function as messengers within the endocrine, immune and nervous systems. Familiar examples include insulin and the incretin hormone GLP-1 — both peptides, and both central to metabolic regulation.

What makes peptides therapeutically interesting is their specificity. Many act as receptor agonists: they bind a particular cell-surface receptor and initiate a defined downstream cascade — up-regulating tissue repair, modulating inflammatory signalling, or prompting the release of a hormone. Because a given peptide engages a narrow set of targets, it can, in principle, influence one pathway with less of the broad, off-target activity associated with some small-molecule drugs. Most therapeutic peptides also have a relatively short half-life, which is one reason dosing and delivery are handled carefully.
